Intercultural Language Use and Language Learning

This volume attempts to address an issue that deserves further attention on the part of language acquisition researchers: that of intercultural learners in instructed language contexts. Given the fact that most speech communities where such learning takes place are at least bilingual, and the idea that English is studied for the purposes of communication among people from different cultures, the book focuses on English learners as intercultural speakers. In so doing, the volume brings together three main research areas: those of the study of English as a lingua franca, the development of communicative competence and the use and acquisition of a language beyond a second one in instructed contexts. This book is for researchers with an interest in the field of second/foreign language acquisition and use, scholars examining learner variables in instructional contexts, and scholars adopting a sociolinguistic perspective in the study of oral discourse and languages in contact.

An Introduction to English Phonology

This is a short, lively, and accessible introduction to the sounds of modern English. Its emphasis on variation, with examples from British, American, New Zealand, and Singaporean English, make it suitable for both native and non-native speakers. McMahon focuses on the vowels and consonants, but also discusses syllables, stress, and the phonology of words and phrases. She introduces new tools and terminology gradually, and discusses the motivation for key concepts.

How To Write Critical Essays

There are so many practical suggestions in this book that you are almost certain to find some of them useful if you want your essays to gain higher marks. But it assumes that you want more than that. If you have no worthier aim than impressing your teachers, essay-writing will at best seem a bore. At worst it will induce panic. The process of researching, planning and writing a critical essay can, and should, be enjoyable. If, at present, the prospect of such an exercise seems either dismal or daunting, that is almost certainly because you have not yet thought hard enough about your own aims in writing criticism. So this book will pose some of the questions which you need to ponder if you are ever to discover what is, for you, the purpose and pleasure in composing critical essays.
