Webster's New World Essential Vocabulary

How's your vocabulary? Is it okay, pretty good, or exceptional? Whatever your
answer to these questions, this is the book for you. For those whose vocabulary
ranges from okay to pretty good, here is the opportunity to improve it. The main
content is grouped into sets of words that have been taken from the SAT and GRE
examinations over the past 10 years. These approximately 1,500 words are expected
by the examiners to be familiar in one form or another to college and graduate
school applicants. They need to become familiar to you, too.
Each word comes complete with a label indicating its part of speech, at least one
definition (often more), and usually at least two sentences using the word. Most
entries also include synonyms and other forms of the word, such as past tense and
gerund forms (for verbs) and adverbial and noun forms (for adjectives). Following
each group of vocabulary words is a matching test so that you can check what
you've just studied.

An Introduction to English Phonology

This textbook is designed for use on ten- or twelve-week introductory courses on English phonology of the sort taught in the first year of many English Language and Linguistics degrees, in British and American universities. Students on such courses can struggle with phonetics and phonology; it is sometimes difficult to see past the new symbols and terminology, and the apparent assumption that we can immediately become consciously aware of movements of the vocal organs which we have been making almost automatically for the last eighteen or more years. This book attempts to show students why we need to know about phonetics and phonology, if we are interested in language and our knowledge of it, as well as introducing the main units and concepts we require to describe speech sounds accurately.

Grammar and Usage for Better Writing

Grammar and Usage for Better Writing is a basic workbook that can provide a foundation
for further study in English grammar and usage. It will benefit students who are learning
the essentials for the first time as well as those who wish to review concepts they have
previously learned. The premise of this book is that understanding how language works
enables us to use it more effectively. This skill can enhance our personal communications,
schoolwork, and professional lives.

The workbook is organized into four major parts. The parts in turn consist of brief
lessons, each with explanations, examples, and practice to ensure that students understand
the concepts being introduced. The book is structured sequentially, with the most basic
elements—the parts of a sentence—introduced in Part One, followed by the composition
of sentences in Part Two. Part Three focuses on some common problems that people encounter
when using English, and it places more emphasis on applying the rules. Students
who are new to grammar study should begin with Part One and work through each section
in order; more advanced students who already know the parts of speech may want to start
with Part Two and use the first section for reference.

Vocabulary 4000

English offers perhaps the richest vocabulary of all languages, in part because its words are culled from so many languages. It is a shame that we do not tap this rich source more often in our daily conversation to express ourselves more clearly and precisely.
There are of course thesauruses but they mainly list common words. Other vocabulary books list difficult, esoteric words that we quickly forget or feel self-conscious using. However, there is a bounty of choice words between the common and the esoteric that
often seem be just on the tip of our tongue. Vocabulary 4000 brings these words to the fore.
Whenever possible, one-word definitions are used. Although this makes a definition less precise, it also makes it easier to remember. Many common words appear in the list of words, but with their less common meanings. For example, the common meaning of champion is "winner." A less common meaning for champion is to support or fight for someone else. (Think of the phrase "to champion a cause.") This is the meaning that would be used in the list.
